7th SFB Member Meeting

Presentations and group activities.

From 9 to 12 September 2024, the 7th SFB member meeting took place in Bad Goisern, Austria, an intense four-day workshop, where PhD students and Postdoctoral Researchers from across our network came together to exchange ideas and discuss cutting-edge topics in science.

The program was enriched by the brilliant presentations of the participants, ranging from theoretical advancements in their field, to communication in science and third mission, to cutting-edge and intriguing topics in science.

Each session sparked lively discussions, driven by the curiosity and insight of the attendees. The setting allowed for a perfect balance of structured talks and informal conversations, fostering a collaborative spirit. Every participant contributed to the dynamic atmosphere, bringing unique perspectives and skills to the table.

Thirteenth Internal SFB Meeting

The 13th Internal SFB Meeting took place between 12-15 February in Villa Sonnwend, Roßleiten, Austria. It was an action-packed event featuring notable talks from members, as well as memorable debuts from external and international participants from realms as far flung as Finland.

In addition to the talks, there was a free afternoon on Tuesday 14 February which coincided with Valentine’s Day.

Twelfth Internal SFB Meeting

The Twelfth Internal SFB Member Meeting took place between 4-7 December 2022 in the Obergurgl Universitätszentrum in Tyrol, Austria. Participants, both internal and external, were treated to a wealth of talks, both concerning progress within the various Tomography Across the Scales subprojects, and also from our external guests, who presented their related research.

Beyond the presentations and collaborative discussions, many members also took the opportunity to ski and hike, for which there were plentiful opportunities in the nearby vicinity.

SFB Member Meeting in Gmunden

From 26th to 29th of September 2022, the SFB members and project associates met in person for the Fifth SFB Member Meeting, which took place at the “Hois’n Wirt” Hotel in Gmunden. This was the first member meeting held in the second funding period of the SFB project and also the first one after covid-19 restrictions. All participants had a chance to present and discuss their work and broader research interests related to their sub-projects in a casual atmosphere. The members enjoyed the enlightening variety of topics reflected in the event program, fruitful interdisciplinary collaboration discussions and a hike up Grünberg and Laudachsee.

A big thanks to all members for their active participation and also to the member speaker Ekaterina Sherina for organizing this event!

Workshop: “Tomographic Reconstructions and their Startling Applications”

We are inviting to the Workshop “Tomographic Reconstructions and their Startling Applications” at the Erwin Schrödinger Institute for Mathematics and Physics (ESI) from March 15 until March 26. Due to the current restrictions, the conference will be held as an online event.

The workshop is organized within this SFB research program and is centered around the mathematical and experimental problems related to the applications studied in this project, involving adaptive optics, optical coherence tomography, photoacoustics, and superresolution imaging.

Mini-symposium in IPMS 2O21

The Tenth International Conference “Inverse Problems: Modeling and Simulation” (IPMS2021) has now been postponed to May 22 –28, 2022. The conference takes place in Malta.

We are happy to announce that we are organizing a mini-symposium entitled “Mathematical Methods in Tomography Across the Scales” related to our SFB. The speakers are members and associated members of the SFB.

See more about this mini-symposium!

Sixth Internal Meeting: Research and future plans!

The 6th Internal Meeting took place virtually on November 30th and December 1st. Unfortunately, we could not meet in person due to the current circumstances but this online meeting gave us the opportunity to be all together in an online room.

In this meeting, very interesting talks were presented from our members and associate members of the SFB. The principal investigators presented the current status of research and future plans. Gabriele Steidl (TU Berlin, Germany) and Glenn van de Ven (University of Vienna) presented their research interests and ideas for future collaborations within the SFB.

Hopefully we can meet in person again in Obergurgl in March!

Winter school “Applied mathematics: as useful as exciting”

Last week (02.03 – 06.03) took place in Kefermarkt the first winter school of the Austrian Study Foundation (Österreichische Studienstiftung). That was the fourth seminar organized by the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften) with the title “Applied mathematics: as useful as exciting”.

Selected pupils from schools around Austria had the possibility to learn and develop themselves applications of mathematics in everyday life. The four topics where: Financial mathematics, mathematical methods in Tomography, graph theory and mathematical modeling of sound.

Axel Kittenberger and Leonidas Mindrinos (University of Vienna) presented the fundamentals of the Radon transform, its properties and application to tomography. The students made 3D origami objects, image them with a system imitating an optical tomographic setup and then obtain the reconstructed pictures. Günter Auzinger (JKU Linz) addressed also the mathematics of sound propagation. The pupils had the opportunity to answer questions like: What makes the pitch of a musical instrument, what makes the sound and what does this mean for the human voice.

Third internal meeting is finished! Report and pictures

The Third Internal Meeting of the SFB Project “Tomography Across the Scales” took place in Obergurgl (Tirol) from December 1 to 5, 2019. More than 30 researchers participated giving interesting talks and with their fruitful discussions helped the members of the SFB to continue their research in the right direction. Along with the 3rd meeting we had the PI and member meetings where we discussed the progress of the common projects and the organization of the future events.
